Who was George Read
About George Read
George Read (1733–1798) was one of Delaware’s most important founding leaders and a key figure in the creation of the United States.
A Founding Father of the United States
George Read is best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As a delegate from Delaware to the Continental Congress, he played a critical role during the nation’s earliest days.
Interestingly, Read initially opposed independence, believing reconciliation with Great Britain was possible. But once the decision was made, he stood with his fellow delegates and signed the Declaration, helping to establish the United States.
A Leader for Delaware
Read spent much of his life serving the people of Delaware:
- Delegate to the Continental Congress
- President of Delaware (Chief Executive)
- U.S. Senator (one of Delaware’s first)
- Chief Justice of Delaware Supreme Court
His leadership helped shape Delaware’s government and its role in the new nation.
A Man of Integrity and Principle
George Read was known for his thoughtful decision-making and dedication to public service. Even when his views differed from others, he remained committed to doing what he believed was best for Delaware and the country.
Lasting Legacy
Today, George Read’s legacy lives on across Delaware, including at schools like George Read Middle School, where students continue to learn in a community named after a true founding leader.
